THE 5 TESLA SPHERE

We designed and built a multi-Tesla magnetic flux source based on permanent magnets. The prototype is a � 110 mm sphere delivering a world-record maximum field of 5 T in a 0.15 mm airgap, continuously and without the need for electrical supply nor cooling system. The aim of our project was the construction of a novel type of intense magnetic flux source using permanent magnets. Such fields are mainly required in scientific experiments (magnetic separation, plasma control, wigglers, M�ssbauer spectroscopy, magneto-optics on synchrotron beamlines...). Intense magnetic fields can theoretically be produced using non-colinear permanent magnet configurations such as Halbach structures. In practice however, the magnets are subject to a strong demagnetisation and the resulting field is therefore limited to about 2.5 T by the material's coercivity.
