Russian Chess Master Garry Kasparov Detained with Other Protesters

In a protest in Moscow called by organizers a "dissenters march" former world chess champion Garry Kasparov was detained by police when about 200 protesters broke from the main group in Turgenev Square and tried to march down Tverskaya street, a major thoroughfare near Pushkin Square. The government had approved the Turgenev site after denying the dissenters original desire to march in Pushkin Square. Pushkin is in the heart of the city, and the march there would have been far more disruptive than the gathering at Turgenev, which is almost a mile east of Pushkin.

The protests are part of a growing anti-Putin opposition that is rising in the face of more centralized authority and press restrictions. Russian President Vladimir Putin has been accused of rolling back reforms and restricting freedoms as he consolidates power. His second term will be finished in 2008, and groups are preparing for elections. Putin enjoys high popularity with many Russians, having brought the country back from near economic ruin. Russia's economy is expanding and the country has regained prestige on the international stage. He is regarded as a strong leader who is doing great work for Russia by some. Others see him as a man determined to take Russia back to its authoritarian past.
